5 FAVORITE MOVIES
CRITERIA FOR PICKING A MOVIE: Could I watch the movie a million and one times and never be bored? Does it have memorable characters? With this in mind, I picked the following...

1

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Tim Burton's

Jack Skellington is the local hero in Halloween Town, where Halloween is the most important day of the year.  But he longs for something more, something besides scaring people...  After a night of wandering, he falls into a door that leads him to the very different Christmas Town.  He brings the idea back to Halloween, and tries to take over Christmas...

I've loved this movie for a long, long time now, and whenever I'm bored, I can be seen going back to this movie.  I can repeat the entire thing almost word for word, and sing along with the songs, and...  Could this be counted as nostalgia if I never really stopped watching it?

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
Andrew Lloyd Webber's

When Christine starts getting voice lessons from a mysterious tutor, no one, least of all Christine herself, can guess that it's none other than the infamous Phantom.  What happens when obsession and love clash?

I've been enthralled with the music for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera since sometime in Elementary school.  But despite my love of the music, I never saw the play.

So when the movie version of the stage play came out, I was thrilled beyond belief.  Even better, it lived up to all my expectations.  (Although I admit, I could point out almost every instance of changed words or dialogue.)  I watched it many times with the sound blasting as soon as it came out on DVD, and am sure I will continue to do so in the future.

LABYRINTH

Sarah's unhappy with her life.  She has a new stepmother, a new baby brother named Toby, and it seems like her parents ignore her.  So one night, while babysitting Toby, she jokingly asks the goblins to take Toby away.  ...Imagine her surprise when they do.  Sarah must journey through a dangerous, treacherous labyrinth to retrieve her baby brother.  And maybe she'll learn a little along the way.

A world where goblins and fairies and every other creature exists just around the next bend, and where a mysterious, sometimes evil, sometimes kind, but always fascinating Goblin King waits for Sarah.  It's no wonder it captured my imagination.  I can fall into it again and again.

MULAN

Mulan's a spunky tomboy who's only wish is to bring her family honor.  This is easier said than done when all a woman can do to bring honor is marry an eligible match.  When Mulan's father is forced to join the Chinese army, though, Mulan takes her father's place.  If her charade is discovered, the penalty is death.  Can she keep it up?

Out of all the Disney films, Mulan is probably the one I like the best.  Something about the music and the characters clicked with me.  I've watched it many, many times.

SOME LIKE IT HOT

When two out of work, male musicians witness a mob shooting, they have to hurry out of town or be the next victims!  Their only option is to dress as women and join an all-female traveling band.  While one falls in love with a fellow female band member, the other is pursued and wooed by an older, rich man.  ...And those gangsters?  Yeah, they're still around.

Funny and wonderful!  Everyone should see it at least once, if only for the last line of the movie.  I've adored the movie since I first saw it, and whenever I need something light, this is one of my first choices.
