5 FAVORITE YAOI COUPLES
CRITERIA FOR PICKING A COUPLE: Did I look forward to their scenes together and cheer them on? Were they a focus for me in the anime/manga/game? Was I contantly wondering what would happen next with the two? With this in mind, I picked the following people...
WARNING! "YAOI" means male/male relationships! Guys dating other guys! If you can't handle this, please go back and check out my other lists instead. Thank you!

SASUKE / NARUTO
Naruto
I was hooked from episode 3, when someone by accident knocked Naruto those last few inches and Sasuke and Naruto gave an involuntary kiss. Heh heh. From then on, my major focus in the show was the budding relationship between Sasuke and Naruto - as rivals, as friends, as partners, as teammates... They interested me.
Other characters came in that I fell in love with too, but Sasuke and Naruto stayed my true focus. It's carried me through every plot twist, and has given me a slightly scewed perspective of the show. Everything idiotic that Naruto or Sasuke does is just a method of pushing the two together in some manner, to prove that these two connect beyond all others. If Naruto gets in trouble, it's so that Sasuke can rescue him, and vice versa. |

RIKU / SORA
Kingdom Hearts
I initially wanted Kingdom Hearts for two reasons: (1) Cloud and (2) Sephiroth. In the commercials on tv, I saw flashes of both Cloud and Sephiroth. That, combined with the fact that Suikoden III was about to come out, prompted me to buy a Playstation 2.
When I started the game, though, I was quickly fascinated by Riku & Sora and their relationship. Their mutual rivalry, Sora's stubborness to save Riku, Riku's fall into darkness, Riku's jealousy, and finally Riku's redemption, all combined to keep me going through the game, simply to see how it ended. The fact that the game doesn't really resolve anything only added to my interest. |

SEPHIROTH / CLOUD
Final Fantasy 7
I was not into yaoi when I first tried playing Final Fantasy 7. My favorite pairings were Cloud / Tifa, and Sephiroth / Aeris. Several years later, though, as I began getting into yaoi, I re-evaluated these pairings, read lots of fanfiction, saw lots of pretty fanart and doujinshi, and gradually my preferences changed. Then one fanfic in particular made me a rabid Sephiroth / Cloud fan, and I never turned back.
I find both Cloud and Sephiroth fascinating as stand-alone characters, too. Cloud is about as messed-up as is possible - physically, mentally, and spiritually. And Sephiroth's actions confused me during the game. While declaring one thing, he seemed to do something else... But together, they created a terrific foil to each other.

XELLOS / ZELGADIS
Slayers
When I first began watching Slayers, I actually focused on the het pairing of Lina/Zelgadis, and this was my absolute favorite for a very long time (which is apparent if you look at the fanfiction I wrote from 1999-2001). Even once I began getting into yaoi, this did not change.
But as I grew to like Xellos, ever so slowly, my mindset changed, and one day - prodded along by fanfiction - I realized I liked the idea of Xellos & Zelgadis very, very much. I guess it's not so surprising, when one considers that Xellos and Zelgadis are not only two of my favorite characters from Slayers, but from all of anime. Who doesn't want to see their favorite characters end up together?

JOWY / SHUJINKOU
Suikoden II
For the record, "Shujinkou" is the main character, the hero of Suikoden II. In Japanese, "Shujinkou" simply means "protagonist, main character, or hero (of the story)." This is not his official name, as he doesn't really have one...
In many ways, the pairing is almost an archetype: best friends turned enemies/rivals. Add in buckets of angst over their decisions, lots of moments between the two, and it's no surprise why I came to love this pairing. Whenever I come across other "best friends turned enemies" types, I inevitably compare it back to this pairing. |
