Family relative fic. A character has a relative the other characters have never heard of. (A twin, a brother or sister, a mother or father, a grandfather or grandmother, a cousin, a stepbrother or sister (etc), a half-brother or sister (etc).) Why hasn’t anyone else heard of this relative? Where have they been all this time? Did the character even know they had this relative? Or were they hiding the fact that they had this relative from everyone else?

Unexpected fiancee fic. A character finds out they’re engaged! Do they know the person they’re engaged to? Or is it a stranger? How did it happen? Is the character already engaged to or involved with someone else? How does the effect their relationship? How come they don’t know about it? ….Or did they know, and they just hid it from everyone? Or did they forget?

Forbidden book fic. A character finds a book they shouldn’t. What does it say? What is the content? Why is it forbidden? How did they find it? Is it something personal, like a diary or a journal? Or is a manual? …information on some event? …a fiction novel? …Does the character even know what it is?

Back to the future fic. A character manages to go back in time. How far back does the character go? Whom do they meet? Do they see anyone they know from the present? What kind of impact do they have? Do they do something that changes the present? If so, is it a good or bad change? Or were they instrumental in setting up the present the way they know it, making sure everything stays the same?

Blanket fic. Two characters end up in a cabin in the middle of a snowstorm. They’re isolated from all civilization, completely alone. In the cabin, there’s nothing but a single blanket to keep them warm. What do they do? How do they survive the night?

High School fic. Turn all the characters into modern-day high school students. (This is assuming they aren’t already.) Who would their teachers be? What kind of cliques would the characters be part of? How would their grades be? What kind of extracurricular activities would they do? If they don’t have parents, then who is taking care of them?

Music fic. The characters are all members of a popular music group. Who would be part of rival groups? Who would be fans or groupies? Why was the music group formed in the first place, and by who? What type of music do they play? Pop, rock, classical, jazz, orchestral, etc.

Stage fic. The characters are actors and actresses in a stage play. What play are they doing? Is it within the timeline of the show, or is it a completely alternate universe? What's the play about, and who gets to play what part?

Continuation fic. The series/game/graphic novel ends. Everything is wrapped up. …Now what happens? Do the characters live happily ever after? Or do they go on more adventures? Do problems crop up that they didn’t expect?

Private Investigator fic. A character is a PI, working out of a small office in a classic setting. How did they end up in this position? Who else do they work with, and who are their clients?

Royalty fic. Your characters are royalty of a realm outside the series’ normal bounds. Are they the emperor of a distant, unknown land, or are they the younger son of a European-like kingdom? Do they know they’re royalty at all? Is the kingdom in another world altogether, or is it more local? Does this fit within the bounds of the normal timeline of events, or is it a completely alternate history?

Crossover fic. Characters from two different series somehow meet. How does it happen, and why? Is there a purpose to their meeting now, even if the characters themselves don’t know it? Do they have to cross time and/or universes to meet each other? What are their reactions to each other?

Crossdresser fic. A character crossdresses! (Note: this character can’t normally crossdress.) Why is the character crossdressing? Did they lose a bet, or is it for a mission or job of some type? Do their friends and/or enemies know? If they do, what are their friends’/enemies’ reactions? If not, to what lengths do they go to hide it from their friends & enemies?

Fairy Tale fic. Take your favorite characters from your favorite series, and plunk them in the middle of a fairy tale. What roles do they play? Does the ending change? What fairy tale will you put them into?

Parody fic. One can mock just about any series. So... write a fic that parodies your favorite series! Emphasize the flaws in the characters, the cheesy aspects of the plot, and the illogical ideas that some of the characters may have.

Groundhog Day fic. A character is forced to replay the same day over and over. What day do they have to replay? What lesson do they have to learn before time resumes its normal course?

Family Reunion fic. A character gets an invitation to a family reunion. How does the character's companions react? Is it expected? Is it good news or bad? Do the others know anything about the character's family? Does the character try to avoid the party? If so, how are they convinced to go? Do they take anyone with?

Birthday Party fic. A character is turning another year older, and their companions want to celebrate!

Holiday fic. A holiday (Christmas, Valentines Day, etc) is coming up, and the cast of your favorite series are preparing for it in their own way. Who throws themselves into preparations, and who stays out of it? Is anyone secretly planning on giving something to their love interest? Do their plans work, or do they go awry?

Resurrection fic. A character that died during the series comes back to life. How did it happen, and why? Who knows about it? Now that they're alive again, whom do they go to see?

Amnesia fic. A character loses their memory. What do they forget, and what do they remember? How did they lose their memory? Are they any different without their old memories? Is there any way to get their memories back?

Love Potion fic. Characters are given something that either makes them fall madly in love with the first person they see, or makes them incredibly lusty. What caused it to happen? Do the characters know they were given this? Do the characters who aren't effected resist, or do they "help out" those in need?

Matchmaker fic. A character acts as matchmaker to two others. Why does the matchmaker do it? Who do they try to get together? Does the matchmaker go undetected - ie, does anyone else they're playing as matchmaker?

Vacation fic. All the characters go on a nice, relaxing vacation... Is it all that relaxing, or does something happen to cut it short? What do they do, and whom do they meet?

"Hello, nurse!" fic. A character gets sick with something that requires bedside surveillance and lots of rest. What exactly do they get sick with, and does it require medicine? Who takes care of the character? What’s happening with the other characters? Does the person who gets sick get to know anyone unexpected during their unplanned rest? Do they sit quietly and heal, or do they continue to insist they’re fine and try to get up?

"I'm back!" fic. A character leaves for a number of years, then comes back. Why did they leave? Why did they finally come back? What happened to the other characters during that time? Do they fit back in, or do they have trouble adjusting? Has anyone been waiting for them to return? If so, why were they waiting? If not, why was no one waiting? What happened to the character while they were gone?

"It went like this" fic. Rewrite an event in a series. Are you unhappy about where a series ended? Do you wish that events had happened differently? Write what you wish had happened. Is this a big or small change to the story? How big of a change does it make to the timeline?

Kidnap fic. A character is kidnapped. Is this person easily kidnapped, or is it hard? What happens to the character who’s kidnapped? Why are they kidnapped? What happens during captivity? Do they rescue themselves, or does friends/family rescue them?

Pirate fic. A pirate ship! Take your favorite host of characters and plunk them in the middle of a pirate ship (if they aren’t part of one already). Who’s the captain, who’s the cabin boy (or girl)? What other roles can they play? Whom do they meet while pillaging and plundering other ships? Do they take any prisoners, or do they kill everyone they meet?

Broken hearts fic. A character suddenly gets married or engaged to someone else, and no one was expecting it. How do the others react? Does it leave any old love interests in the dirt? If so, how do they deal with this unexpected turn of events? Do the old love interests find anyone new, or do they decide that revenge is the bed course?

Wishes come true fic. A character has a wish come true. What do they wish for? Do they actually think it will happen, or do they think it's a hoax? Do they even realize they made a wish? How is the wish granted?

Geek gets the girl(s)/guy(s) fic. Every series has at least one character who has absolutely no luck in love. The person they like scorns them or thinks of them "just as a friend," and no one else is interested in them (or they're oblivious to it). What if suddenly everyone was after them? How did it occur? Why all of a sudden? Who manages to win their affections?

Haunted house fic. The characters have to visit a haunted house for some reason. What do they find there? Is it actually haunted, or is it all an elaborate hoax?

Slave fic. A character is put on auction and sold to the highest bidder. Is it outright slavery, or is just to raise money for some event? Who buys them? Do they have any alterior motives for buying this character? Do they want them for romance, lust, revenge, to save them from someone worse, curiosity, or maybe they just want help on their homework? (^_^)

"It's in his kiss..." fic. A character wants to kiss their sweatheart, but also wants to make a good impression.  So, they ask their good friend for help practicing!  Does this kiss stir up any hidden feelings?  Who does the character end up with - the sweatheart... or the friend?

Thief fic.  A character is a thief.  What do they steal, and why? How did they get started? How far are they willing to go to complete a job? Who's after them? Does anyone in "normal" life suspect their night-job? Or do they not have a "normal" life?

Bored fic. A character is bored with life. They want a change of pace. So, what (or who) happens to change it all? Do they enjoy the change, or curse it? Now that they're no longer bored, can they go back to their old life?

Angel/Devil fic. A character, who happens to be an angel or devil, goes to earth for some reason. What reason? Who do they meet on earth? Do they go back to heaven/hell changed? Or do they not go back at all? What has changed as a result of their trip?

Desperation fic. A character is suffering from the ultimate run of bad luck. They have lost everything - family, friends, home, pets, possessions, etc. Or they need some fast cash, or risk losing something important. What do they do now that they have nothing to lose? Does anyone help them, or do they stand up on their own? Do they change their luck, or does it continue?

Treasure fic. There be treasure in them thar hills! ...or something like that. Your character finds an old treasure map, and decide to go after it. Do they bring in anyone else to help? What happens while going after the treasure? And is anyone else after it, too?

Runaway fic. A character runs away. Now their loved ones must figure out the reason why, and where they went. What happens to the runaway while they're gone? Do they get help, or no help? Who do they meet? What about their loved ones; how are they taking the runaway's disappearance?

Out of character fic. A character is acting oddly, in ways counter to their normal nature. Does anyone notice? Are they worried? Why is the character acting so strangely? What consequences will it have on their relationships with their loved ones?

"I quit!" fic. A character has had enough. Maybe it's a broken relationship, a bad job, or trouble at home, but the character refuses to try and deal with it anymore. What do they do? Do they leave? Are they even allowed to leave? What about the people they're leaving behind - what do they think of it?

Nightclub fic. A character (and friends, possibly) go to a nightclub for some entertainment. Do they go regularly, or is it their first time? Who do they meet? Does anything unexpected occur?

Truth or Dare fic. A group of characters end up in a game of Truth or Dare. What will they reveal, and what will they be made to do?

Spin the Bottle fic. A classic game where a bottle spins, and two people end up kissing each other. What havoc can this simple game create? Who kisses who, and what happens as a consequence?

Bound Together fic. Two characters are bound together and cannot get apart. What binds them - handcuffs, magic, a curse, technology? Why can't they undo it? What happens with the two characters while they're bound together? Do their loved ones know? If so, what do they think of it?

Child of prophecy fic. "This child shall change the world." When a character is born, someone thinks they're a divine child of prophecy. What type of prophecy - will they protect or destroy the world? And is the prophecy true? How does the character grow up? Are they told of the prophecy?

Vampire fic. A character is turned into a vampire. When did it happen - awhile ago, or just recently? Does anyone know, or have then hidden it? What changes now that they get nutrition through a... different source?

Shaggy Dog fic. A character is turned into a dog, cat, or other such common pet.  How did it occur and why? How can it be reversed? Does anyone take them in, or are they left on the streets? Does anyone realize who they really are? Are there any time limits before the transformation is permanent?

Apocalypse fic. The dreaded apocalypse hits the Earth, wiping out most of humanity. Decades, hundreds or thousands of years later, humanity hasn't recovered. The main character is born and grows up. What role do they have to play in this world? Do they have a goal? Who do they meet? How do they survive in this wasteland?

Ninjas fic. Providing the series isn't already based on ninjas, your characters come across a secret society of ninjas. Or, it's an alternate universe and your characters are the ninjas. How does this change things? If your characters meet the ninjas, then how do they match up against their power? If your characters are the ninjas, how did their experiences growing up differ?

Babysitting fic. The characters are suddenly given a baby to take care of for a certain amount of time - a day, a week, a month, a year. Why were they given this baby? How do the characters react? Do they turn out to be good parents, or do they suck? What does taking care of the baby teach them? Are they happy or sad to see the baby go back to their parents at the end?

Hero to zero fic. Take an amazing character - one of those types who's really good at what they do, nearly unbeatable. What if the character didn't have that talent - in fact, they suck at it? Would they get into something else instead, or pursue it anyway? How does this change the story?

Bad romance fic. The characters are all part of a really bad romance, filled with heaving bosoms and ripped bodices and torn shirts. Choose a typical romance setting - modern, country, regency England, futuristic, medieval. Then choose a typical romantic plot. Now incorporate your characters into it.
NOTE: For typical romance plots, you can try researching the backs of novels at your local library, or look some up on amazon.com. You can also try and find a romance story generator online.

Worlds collide fic. Two characters who don't normally meet, maybe have never met, are suddenly thrown together. What reason could be given for their interaction? What do they learn about each other? Does anything develop between them - friendship, respect, romance? Do they maintain the connection after they no longer need to see each other?

Job switch fic. Two characters switch jobs for a day, a week, etc. How well does it go? Do they fail miserably, or do they have a flair for it? Do they find hidden talents? When the time is over, do they want to go back to their old job? Has respect grown between the two who switched jobs?

Psychic fic. A character turns out to be psychic, or it's an alternate reality and they've always been psychic. What do they do with their powers? Do they consider it a gift or a curse? How does it effect their every day relationships? If the powers suddenly developed, why didn't they manifest before, and why now? Is the character really psychic, or are they a phony, or maybe it's all in their head?

Two realities fic. A character is pulled into an alternate reality of their own reality. How different is this reality? Where is their "alternate self" during all this? And how do the people in this alternate reality react? What does the character have to do to get back home? Do they even want to go home?

Physical change fic. A character goes through a significant, live-altering physical change. They de-age, going from 15 years old to 5. Or they go from being 100% male to 100% female. Or maybe they gain extra appendages - wings, clawed feet, hooves, horns. Was the character expecting it, or was it a total surprise? Was it voluntary or involuntary? And how did such an improbable, even impossible change occur?

Magical Girl fic. A character becomes a magical girl! Does this fit their personality? Or is it a complete mismatch? Maybe they're male, or they're in their twenties? What powers do they gain? Do they protest, or do they go with it? What cause are they using their powers for? What kind of magical helper do they get?

Everything was a lie fic. Take a known truth from a series. Something just universally accepted as totally, unchangeably true. Then either disprove it or turn it into a big lie/conspiracy.
Examples:
Naruto. Sasuke's clan was killed when he was a child. He saw them dead, saw it in Itachi's memories. ...But what if this weren't true? What if they were still alive, despite what Sasuke saw, what his brother showed him? Where are they, and what actually happened?
Harry Potter. Voldemort is evil and is trying to control the world. ...But what if this wasn't true? Voldemort is actually working for the greater good! He's never killed anyone! How can you reconcile this?

Tournament fic. The character is going to compete in a tournament. Get the fighting gear ready! ...Or maybe brush up on your shougi or cooking skills. But is it a traditional, kickin' butt tournament, or a game tournament, or some other type of tournament? Maybe it's the annual flower-arranging tournament! Who do they see there? Were the other characters expecting them to compete?

Anonymous admirer fic. A character begins getting anonymous love letters (or emails or flowers or chocolates etc). How do they react? Do they have any idea who the admirer is? Are they receptive to the advances, or completely freaked out by it? How do they react when the truth comes out? And is the admirer someone close, or someone the character has never really looked at before?
